Upper Primary
CSYMI Junior
Phase 1
Journey with Jesus
Phase One encompasses an initial retreat experience called Journey with Jesus, which is based around the proclamation of the Kerygma or basic Gospel message of love, salvation and forgiveness tailored for upper primary school students. This first phase can be run in a classroom, conference or retreat centre by either a classroom teacher, youth minister or youth ministry team.
Retreat Experience
The retreat consists of four videos with the following themes
Introduction: Faith is a Journey with Jesus
God's Love
Salvation
Forgiveness
A Journey with Jesus Workbook guides the students through the retreat and accompanies the video package.
Phase 2
Curriculum Component: Daily Talks with God
Phase Two builds on Journey with Jesus using a Religious Education resource, Daily Talks with God which consists of a prayer journal and video series. These resources can be used each day in class to educate primary school students about the Gospel message, prayer, scripture, sacraments, and service. The program should run through regular Religious Education classes.
Phase 3
Establishment of Junior Youth Ministry Team
Phase Three has the aim of deepening the faith of students through ministry and service opportunities within their school and broader community. Once students have completed the initial retreat experience and are working their way through the Daily Talks with God Journal, a Junior Ministry Team is formed that conducts a small ministry or service outreach initiative. This may include a class liturgy which touches on themes explored throughout the Daily Talks with God Journal. Phase Three aims to further challenge and build on the faith of members of the Junior Youth Ministry Team through engaging them in mission. This can take the form of assisting in the running liturgies and retreats for younger students or fundraising initiatives within the school or parish.
The CSYMI Junior Skills Series Booklet helps guide the Junior Youth Ministry team in developing some essential youth ministry skills. These skills include drama, testimony, and running games and ice-breakers for a group.
Phase 4
Beyond School
While completing the first three within-school phases of CSYMI Junior, students are encouraged to connect with the broader Church, including parish and local CSYMI senior youth ministry teams, for further formation and ministry opportunities.
